What Is Internal Phosphorus Loading?
When discussing phosphorus management, most people think about nutrients entering a waterbody from outside sources such as wastewater, runoff, or fertilizer.
However, phosphorus can also originate from within the waterbody itself.
Over time, phosphorus settles into bottom sediments where it may remain stored for months or even years. Under certain environmental conditions, a portion of that stored phosphorus can be released back into the water column. This process is known as internal phosphorus loading.
How Does It Happen?
Bottom sediments act as a reservoir for nutrients.
Changes in oxygen levels, temperature, biological activity, and water mixing can all influence whether phosphorus remains bound in the sediment or is released back into the surrounding water.
Because of this natural process, phosphorus concentrations may increase even if new external nutrient inputs have been reduced.
